The Department of Posts is advancing an initiative to establish a standardized, geo-coded addressing system in India, for ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizen-centric delivery of public and private services. In this regard, the Department had collaborated with IIT Hyderabad for developing a National Addressing Grid, named as Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.

The DIGIPIN layer will act as the addressing reference system which can be used for logically locating addresses with directional properties built into it due to the logical naming pattern followed in its construction.

The DIGIPIN is proposed to be fully available in the public domain and can be easily accessed by everyone. The DIGIPIN Grid system being an addressing referencing system, can be used as the base layer for other ecosystems, including various service providers and utilities, where addressing is one of the processes in the workflow.

This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.

The advent of DIGIPIN will mark a revolutionary step in India’s journey towards digital transformation by bridging the crucial gap between physical locations and their digital representation.

The Department has released a beta version of National Addressing Grid ‘DIGIPIN’ on 19.07.2024 for public feedback, the details of which may be accessed through the India Post website: https://www.indiapost.gov.in/vas/Pages/digipin.aspx

The Department of Post in collaboration with MyGov cordially invites you to explore the beta platform and provide constructive feedback, which will help in fine tuning the specifications of the DIGIPIN.

मेरा नाम आशीष कुमार प्रजापति पलवल हरियाणा का निवासी हू। आज बहुत क्रोध वश मुझे लिखना पड़ रहा है। भाजपा का कार्यकर्ता भी हू पिछले 7 वर्ष से हिंदू संगठनों से होते हुए भाजपा में आया लेकिन कुछ अलग लगा नहीं बाकी सरकारों की तरह ये बात तो चलो बाद की ये मुझे लगता है शायद ये बात आप तक पहुंचे न पहुंचे माननीय प्रधानमंत्री जी पिछले 13 घंटों से यहां बिजली नहीं है बावजूद इसके की आज हिंदुओं का आज इतना बड़ा महापर्व सोया हुआ है यहां का प्रशाशन और इससे पहले सोए है हमारे विधायक चुनाव है नजदीक ही आपको पता लग जाएगा कितनी यहां जनता सेवा हो रही है कितने आपके विधायक ईमानदार है कितनी ये हिंदुत्व की पार्टी है । कोई और समुदाय का कुछ हो तो बिजली मिनटों के लिए नहीं जाती यहां घंटों हो गई खैर जैसा आपको उचित लगे बाकी ये है कि यहां व्यस्था कुछ भी ठीक नहीं है किसी भी विभाग में न हमारे विधायक यहां सुनते कार्यकर्ताओं की भी

DIGIPIN contains the geographic location of the area. It is possible to extract the latitude and longitude of the address from the DIGIPIN with low complexity.  DIGIPIN has been designed for the Indian context. All points of interest to India (including maritime regions) can be assigned codes, and it is possible to assign unique digital addresses even in areas that are very densely populated.  The format of the DIGIPIN is intuitive and human-readable. Effort was made to infuse a sense of directionality within the format of DIGIPIN.

DIGIPIN layer will act as the addressing reference system which will be available offline and can be used for locating addresses in a logical manner with directional properties built into it due to the logical naming pattern followed in its construction. DIGIPIN can be also used for emergency rescue operations, national disasters like flood. DIGIPIN is proposed to be fully available in public domain and can be easily accessed by everyone. Since no private address data is stored against DIGIPIN grid value, there is no privacy concern associated with DIGIPIN being in public domain. DIGIPIN Grid system being an addressing referencing system, can be used as the base stack for development of other ecosystems where addressing is one of the processes in the workflow.

DIGIPIN is visualised as an alpha numeric offline grid system that divides the geographical territory of India into uniform 4- meter by 4-meter(approx.) units. Each of these 4m X 4m units (approx.) is assigned a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code, derived from the latitude and longitude coordinates of the unit. This alphanumeric code serves as the offline addressing reference for any specific location within the DIGIPIN system. DIGIPIN is thus strictly a function of the latitude and longitude of the location represented as a grid value. The system is designed to be scalable, adaptable, and integrated with existing GIS applications.

The implementation of this Digital Addressing system would ensure simplified addressing solutions for citizen centric delivery of public and private services. A standardized geo-coded addressing system would enhance India’s geo-spatial structure. It would add to the geospatial knowledge stack of the country in line with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which seeks to strengthen the geospatial sector to support national development, economic prosperity and a thriving information economy.

Benefits of DIGI PIN If you work in logistics, proof of shipment and proof of delivery documents are critical for your organization. If You must ensure these files are included in your delivery process to stay organized and keep your customers happy.
