Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Sir, In case of raw material, before promoting it, the greatness of its application is to be sold. Silk as such may be attractive but it is the beauty of the silk garment that attracts the buyer more. Hence we need to associate/involve the best fashion designers of different countries to design the dresses to their native taste and introduce in their countries. Govt can facilitate "Indian Silk Fairs" in those countries with the help of Local Fashion Houses and Indian Textile Industries.

I was talking to a person making a Banarasi Silk Saree in Crafts Museum, Delhi. He revealed that he gets only 10% of the market cost of the saree & rest goes to the middle men. Unless we reduce this chain of reaching the product to the market, I am afraid, we won't be able to give impetus to demand. Moreover, we need to equip the craftsmen with the latest technique and train them on their use. Silk is the preferred fabric & will remain so. So demand exists, we need to work on supply chain & cost

I have high question about the agriculture in areas like south Gujarat where people don't have water to grow crops. They only cultivate Kharif crops because they are highly dependent on rain. They don't have money to dig their own well. They have large fields to be cultivated but there is no water to do so. They have high potential for farming, imagine what will they serve this nation if we could provide them at least 10 months of water supply. They can highly contribute to this nation HELP THEM
