On top Varanasi is the PM's constituency nowadays. Instead of demand in hike of import duty, all efforts should be made by Central Silk Board and Silk culturists to enhance the production and quality so that, it will put to an end to import of silk at all. Thus, focus should be on the above concern, instead of asking for increase in duty which is detrimental not only to weavers but also for domestic sericulture, as it will compel the weavers to switch over to another profession than this one.

Indian-Varanasi Products, made from fine silk are in demand in India and abroad. The famous Varanasi hand-woven saree, since the ancient times, is ranked among the finest traditional sarees Internationally.
It alone has more than 1/2 a million weavers involved in Silk or Handloom Industry. The majority of them are from socially and economically weaker sections of the society and are extremely poor. The Handloom/ silk industry is a source of livelihood of about ten lac people in the region.

The weavers 's interest must be protected. More and more government sponsored exhibitions of handloom materials should be organized. The legislators have the responsibility to protect the handloom sector of their respective areas.

There are some basic issues in using silk material(cost, maintenance, etc) and so the class using pure silk is limited, and normally from good to rich background. So if we lower the prices a bit, we can reach middle class, and by improving the quality and appeal of these items we can make them the obvious choice of the buyer.
To flourish in foreign market the appearance and quality will be very important.
