Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

INCREASE PURCHASING POWER OF INDIANS BY GRADUALLY REDUCING TAXES ON INDIANS. NOT ONLY SILK BUT ALL SECTORS OF GOODS AND SERVICES ECONOMY WILL GET A BOOST, IF PURCHASING POWERS ARE INCREASED.

Manufacturing small home decor stuff from Indian silk. The majority of Indians like Silk, however cannt afford. Decor thing like wall hanging, small sofa/table cover, etc can made of silk, as the silk consumption per article would be less, however if consumed on large scale (considering huge population of middle class), it will help in new profit making business venture. Doing this the farmers will get there due, and the manufacturers need not cut on there profit margin.

GOVERNMENT HAS NO BUSINESS TO DO BUSINESS. THIS IS WHAT MODI JI USED TO SAY BEFORE ELECTION. AB KYA HOGAYA. WHY GOVERNMENT IS INTERVENING INTO EACH AND EVERY SPHERE OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY. WHY GOVERNMENT CANNOT REMAIN JUST A OUTSIDE FACILITATOR. THE ONLY WAY TO INCREASE DEMAND IS TO REDUCE INCOME TAX ON MIDDLE CLASS. I PAID 68000 AS TAX THIS YEAR. IF GOVERNMENT SPARES ME THIS AMOUNT, I MAY SPEND IT ON SILK PRODUCTS AND OTHER ITEMS THEREBY SUPPORTING LAKHS OF CRAFTSMAN TRADERS OF SILK. REDUCE TAX

MORE DISCOUNTS TO INDIAN SILK PRODUCTS, THAN TO FOREIGN SILK. ( 1 ) THERE SHOULD BE GOOD DIFFERENCE IN DISCOUNT LEVEL BETWEEN INDIAN SILK & FOREIGN SILK. ( 2 ) BESIDES DISCOUNT, OTHER OFFERS / GIFT COUPONS TO BUY INDIAN SILK PRODUCTS, DISCOUNT / OFFER FOR KHADI PRODUCTS, etc. TO BE INTER-LINKED & ALSO WITH PMJDY / BANK ATM CARDS. Thanks, for giving us the opportunity to give our views. SHANMUGANATHAN.B / 98948-66843. Coimbatore ( TN ).

It should not be done.....government must not interfere in normal market processes....that will only distort markets....if govnment does anything to promote one product it will harm some other products....for example promoting silk consumption may harm cotton consumption in a hot country like India....these things must be left to the market to decide....
