Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Our raw/processed silk is not competitive in International market. To make it competitive technological up-gradation is required at each stage right from farming till marketing which needs huge investments coupled with very long gestation period to get the results. To make it competitive in short term we must think of converting raw silk or yarn into an intermediate/final product by value addition such as designer garments of pure silk or mixed with khadi with mix of traditional embroidery works

A simple step is to give subsidies to silk items to make sure that a common man can have access to these items bcz every one knows silk is good , luxurious cloth etc and wants to buy it. But can't buy it bcz he or she can't afford it.

Considering that silk is a high end product; the visibility can be increased by targeting upper middle class/upper class; promoting it more in cold climate areas; and/or innovating by blending silk with other fabric like cotton, synthetic (wherever possible) so that it reaches other classes too; probably making it a mandatory dress code for delegates on international tours and/or local official meetings.. :))... promoting sericulture so that production cost reduces on the whole

Actually silk is seen as high priced, difficult to maintain and uneasy to wear fabric. So the only place left for silk is in formal rich dress market. In Punjab we have silk suits and matching juttis, purse made of same fabric for a bride. We can extend the idea to include traditional dresses of our country as well as other countries. And highlight other usage of silk like for shining hair, jewellery pouches, exclusive packaging, greeting card printing and so on
