Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

With all the American Fast Food Chains making the way in India due the heavy decline in demand from the American and other markets, don't you think we as Indians should be worried about the unhealthy Lifestyle and danger of becoming a Dumping ground, not to forget the fact that we have no Indian counterpart (Brand) to give a good competition to these Global Brands?

We have a wonderful opportunity to convert the Gorai Island in Mumbai into to a Mangrove Sanctuary. Lots of species of birds and animals that are being affected by the pollution. It has the capability to become a wonderful tourist spot if it is developed in the lines of the Singapore orchid park.... We already have tourist spots like the Pagoda, EsselWorld, Water Kingdom, Gorai beach, Manori Beach, etc. We can have a 3 to 4 days package for tourists which will include all these spots.

'Lat lagani hogi' we have to make people used to of wearing silk...than only we can think about the growth of this particular sector. And few more points to be consider too 1.Cost control 2.Marketing of Silk 3.Skill industry should be fashion oriented; production strategy should be this "what designs and patterns are in fashion?" rather than What we have produces should be sold.

Dr.Amrita Dey Respected Prime Minister, Swatch Bharat/Clean India is a very inspiring mission. But will Swatch Bharat entail Swatch Bharati citizens as well- brave, upright, spirited, hard working, transparent and accountable? I am in research/higher academics. But sometimes we find ourselves so 'belittled' by faults wihin the system.
