C-DAC, under the guidance of The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and valuable support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), is leading the development of digital standards for Indian languages to enable their seamless integration with the internet and emerging technologies.

As part of this effort, the “AKSHAR Document” series has been envisaged to define Coded Character Sets and Composition Rules for scheduled Indian languages. The aforesaid draft standard defines the character repertoire for Hindi, ABNF rules for permissible character combinations, and provides a reference implementation for validation.

This document will form the foundation for ensuring consistency, accuracy, and interoperability in the digital processing of Indian scripts across platforms and applications.

The document has been published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for public consultation and is open for comments until 21st September, 2025.

The draft may be accessed at the following link:

Dear sir, In my opinion, national languages are very important because they connect us with our culture. As an Indian, I want to focus on national languages in higher school and college. At the same time, English is useful for jobs, higher studies, and global communication. So, I feel we should learn both—respect our national languages and also use English for growth.

There should be words for file, folders, memory, chips, operation, manage, CPU, status, online, register, call, contacts, browser, anti-virus, apps, database, network, disk, filters, draft, code, wireless, wi-fi, monitor, encryption, modem, archive, binary, backup, array, cache, cookie, logic, hardware, software, graphics, spam, scam, reboot, machine, final, binary, digital, printer, quantum, robot, automatic, server, etc. Not only there should be words, but they should be strategically made public through articles, books and news and on equipments and softwares. Upto class 8, students should be taught computers in both Hindi and English.

I propose the introduction of “Patriotism and Civic Responsibility” as a compulsory subject in all educational institutions — from nursery to university. The subject should: • Teach the values of sincerity, sympathy, cooperation, and national pride. • Include practical activities such as street plays, community service, and social projects. • Encourage students to identify and solve local problems, fostering a mindset of contribution.
