The role of institutions of higher education in societal development is becoming increasing significant. In recent years, higher education has isolated itself from the society and there is a need to re-establish and strengthen higher education’s close linkages with the society. How can Universities foster social responsibility and engage in community outreach programmes. Sharing some working examples would also be a useful input.

Students should utilize their knowledge through different fields in a united way for the overall development of the village. Apart from sanitation, hygiene and road facilities, students can educate the villagers about effective farming, marketing, saving skills and maximum utilization of water resources. They can financially support needy students and also start "skill courses" for improving potential.

There are few steps to link higher education to the society: 1.Every higher education institute should start "EARN WHILE LEARN" scheme to promote government policies in the society and ensure that no student has to worry about his employment and leave his studies for the same. 2.Student should be given the responsibility to survey the social problems and development plans executed by state/center government. 3.Practical approach should be implemented more in curriculum.
