By 2022, solar energy is estimated to contribute 114 GW, followed by 67 GW from wind power and 15 GW from biomass and hydropower. The target for renewable energy has been increased to 227 GW by 2022. Total installed capacity of power stations in India stood at 373.43 GW as of October 2020.

India is the world's third largest producer and third largest consumer of electricity. The national electric grid in India has an installed capacity of 375.32 GW as of 31 December 2020. Renewable power plants, which also include large hydroelectric plants, constitute 36.17% of India's total installed capacity.

Public companies mostly dominate the power sector across the value chain, except in the generation sector where private sector is very active. While central government backed generation companies may supply power to multiple states, generation companies owned by state governments supply power to the parent state only.
