The Ministry of Education, Department of School Education & Literacy, Government of India in collaboration with MyGov, invites citizens to participate in an Essay Writing Contest on the theme “Revisiting the Emergency After 50 Years”, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared in India in 1975.

The Emergency (June 25, 1975 – March 21, 1977) is one of the most defining and debated periods in India's democratic journey. It witnessed the suspension of fundamental rights, censorship of the press, and a significant reshaping of political dynamics and civil liberties.

This essay contest provides an opportunity to revisit that crucial chapter in India’s history and reflect on its lessons for contemporary society. Participants are encouraged to explore how the Emergency impacted democratic institutions, citizen rights, and the constitutional framework—and how its memory continues to influence public discourse today.

Submission Guidelines:
(i) The essay should be between 1500 and 2500 words in length.
(ii) The contest is open to school students in India, as well as students of schools affiliated with Indian boards (CBSE/ICSE/State Boards, etc.)
(iii) Contestants will be evaluated in the following groups: Classes 6–8, 9–10, and 11–12.
(iv) Participants must ensure that their MyGov profile is complete with details of DOB, State, etc., as it will be used for all official communication.

Gratification:
(i) Certificate of Appreciation will be awarded to the selected winners by the Ministry of Education.
(ii) Selected narratives may be featured on official digital platforms as a part of a collective memory archive to engage the public with India’s democratic heritage.
