Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Exclusive tie-ups with very famous international fashion-houses would prove very benificial, where they can be invited and awareness about our our various varities of silks from moga to kanjivaram can be spread. We can actually play the videos explaining the process of how silk is cultivated/dyed and explain how these are very unique to India. Alternatively, tie up with extremely famous political/social personalities who are ready to flaunt indian silk on international forums.

I think silk is a cruel product as it involves killing of silkworms. We should concentrate more on cotton and synthetic fibres.

Silk just like cotton is natural fabric. On the lines of promotions for other domestic products Silk to be encouraged by Yog Guru Baba Ramdev. Even Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji can be asked to promote alongwith other domestic products. Silk is best in winters hence market in European nations can be easily exploited as they like Indian art as well. Our fashion designers can use Silk dresses in Paris Fashion Festivals.

Mr Modi can start by not accepting flowers given to him. Let us all accept only Silk or Khadi towels as garlands, when people welcome you. Same way, when we go abroad and give gifts, give gifts like silk bed sheets, silk wall hangings, silk small purses etc. Let all the politicians, and big industrialists do it. Be the quality of that silk is top most so that worldwide, people appreciate the quality of Indian silk and they will start buying. Research to be done to make silk summer friendly

Maharashtra swearing in ceremony a nuisance to the residents. Since the last 2 nights we are unable to sleep as the preparations for this are underway and there are workers working throughout the night! What is the need for such a ceremony? Why couldn't it be held at MMRDA? Why spoil an international arena? Such a lavish expenditure surely diminishes the faith in the new government.
