Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Create a National Silk Venture Fund. The purpose of this fund will be to invest in progressive silk producing families and coach them into establishing their family brand as global luxury brands. This is similar to the Swiss Watch Industry where family names have been built into global brads e.g. Patek Phillippe, Audemars Piguet etc. The fund will be a government promoted social entrepreneurship fund that will work like a typical Private Equity investor. It will also provide branding consultants

Expand silk to other categories of cloth. These include dishdashas and burqas as worn in the affluent Middle East, furnishings to be used in luxury hotels, nightsuits, lingerie and pyjamas for the West and so on. Promote Silk as the preferred choice of the affluent in the Middle East and Europe for the above, with an emphasis on customization and handcrafting (like Swiss Watches)

Create and encourage Silk fashionwear with NIFT help or private participation. Satiny partywear is common especially abroad and Silk can be made a superior, luxurious alternative. This will work well in Europe and US where heat isnt an issue. Customisation can be a key value proposition as affluent partygoers pay more for exclusivity

Promote the Indian silk saree as a collectible. Introduce the full range of silk sarees available across India, explaining the nuances of each type and promote the collection of at least one of each type thru bundling schemes etc. For example, customers abroad can get into a 'saree a month' scheme where one type of saree is sold every month online. This will also ensure pricing premium, and Indian silk will not have to compete on price with cheaper Chinese Silk.

Promote Silk tourism. Many silk production centres are also historically important centres and are highly amenable to promote tourism e.g. Kanchipuram, Varanasi. Create new tourism circuits 'Indian Silk Routes' that offer domestic and foreign tourists a complete experience including sightseeing, understanding how silk products are made etc. This will generate tourism revenues and also promote the sale of silk.

Indian men and women participate in countless functions and events everyday across the world. Make a message from the PM asking all citizens to embrace Indian made silk clothing in such events. This will have a large scale publicity impact across the globe, not just in India. People representing India, not just the Govt employees shall be asked to wear such clothing anytime they head out for events. CMs, Governors, Ministers, Ambassadors, Stars, Sportsmen etc. as well as Indian families abroad.

Marketing !! Marketing !! and Marketing Make products cheaper and sell through eCommerce companies. If Xiaomi being a 'Chinese' company can sell phones in seconds through eTailors, why can't Silk be sold? Need of hour is to bridge the gap between the makers and sellers. Blow the trumpet!!

I think, Though times have changed use of Silk was deemed sinful by great sages even till date. However. I'd suggest that Flight attendants & Hostesses by mandate wear all the expensive, Lavish & most ornate Silk. Having freedom from officials to choose 2-3 colors as part of the Uniform. If we receive NRIs / Guests in Star / Luxury hotels were Maids will wear Silk saris. I positively presume It will immediately impact the Taste & Curiosity of Foreigners Sooner. What Brits 1ce came to find.
