Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

To increase the demand: Daily use clothes must be blended with silk to give a different touch. Silk can be used in Gift Items wrapping: hence different ways of packing and wrapping with silk cloth must be displayed.

I think for skill development govt. should start from 6th std. and should develop up to 12th std. After completing 12th, student should get both +2 degree as well as ITI degree at same year. It should have simple way so they should not feel extra burden. Every year one subject or start from simple way and it should cover 90% of ITI till reaching 10th class completion and provide smooth entry to 11th class keeping in mind everybody should reach in 11th class.

1. Diversification of silk products like making silk stoles, apart from new designs in sarees and suits. 2. Our country has so many good designers in the fashion industry. They can be approached to design silk products and these can then be sold under the designer labels which will attract the young fashion conscious generation. 3. Tie up with e commerce firms to sell products online. 4. Special discounts during marriage seasons 5. Special programmes like a silk fashion week every year

You have set an ambitious goal to improve India’s ranking from 142 to be in the top 50 within 2 years. I would make a fervent appeal to you to set a similar target for improving India’s ranking in the Human development Index from the existing 135(lowest among all BRICS countries) out of 187 countries to be in the Top 50 within 3 years as improving HDI will be more challenging and would require all out attack on many fronts.
