Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

India has seen incredible phenomena like slum tourism. So how about promoting ‘Silk tourism’? We have much of our silk or silk products coming from small villages/ towns in Andhra, K’taka, Tamilnadu, Orissa, Bengal etc. Many times tourists have only a vague idea about their location. Why not develop them into full-fledged tourist centers from objects of an occasional detour?

Sir,One humble request to Create"MISCELLANEOUS GROUP". No doubt MyGov provide its members one stop platform to share views and ideas on issues of national importance but due to lack of just one more group under the head of "MISCELLANEOUS" the topics transcend all the groups due to their scope and importance become less effective. As members have no option to share views and ideas on all other different issues of social importance so they post their such views under the various irrelevant groups.

Its simple...... First make customers all NRIs across the world and second give them responsibility to do marketing for our products (apply for all) to foreigners and foreign markets. Because they have living those places from so many years and they know those places as well as us.

Suggestions -- (a) block entry of sub standard chinese products, (b) increase purchasing power of indians by reducing maximum income/direct tax rate to 10%, (c) dismantle or reduce in numbers, all harassing/bribe seeking government departments which are extorting money from poor silk producers/craftsperson (d) facilitate hindrance free movement of silk produce throughout country, under new GST or common national market of goods and services (e) review WTO obligations to check cheap outside silk

Creative advertisements in websites, net and through emails on Khadi, Silk and pure cotton materials should be highlighted. Other promotions can be offered as exhibitions, distributing pamphlets, releasing advertisements in TVs and newspapers. Awareness on Silkmark on pure silk sarees shall be made that authenticates the purity of Indian silk standards. Ministers shall wear only cotton on a certain day of the month or week, silk on all Fridays etc., Cotton as school teachers wear on a week time

Thus, focus should be on the above issues, instead of asking for increase in duty which is detrimental not only to weavers interest but also for domestic sericulture, as it will force the weavers to switch over to synthetic man-made fibers like Polyester, putting an end to use of raw silk and traditional handloom/ silk industry, especially Varanasi may loose its identity, which has checked to some extent due to reduction of import duty.

Instead of demand in hike of import duty, all out efforts should be made by Central Silk Board and Seri culturists to enhance the production and quality as well and if the same is improved, it will put to an end to import of silk at all.
