Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

Sir looking at the recent issue of Rampal arrest, I understand that the media is the most unregulated sector of India. I am not pointing the freedom of speech however my concern is there should be safe zone of work for media in a situation of communal riots and police and army operations in civil areas. Any channel not adhering to the same, must be penalized by the ministry. Also the if the informations shared by the media proves wrong, then it has to be dealt legally.

In defence, especially in IAF the morale of PBORS is not good because of one sided welfare policy for officers. So there is a urgent need for revision/ change of policy. There is a huge corruption in defence forces as there is no independent authority to look after it. This is a matter of concern for defence as IAF is most technical and modernaised force of India. Goveronment should take good policies to boost the morale of PBORS. The issue of jawans should be a national interest. JAI HIND

There is a vast potential to promote manufacture of Value added products in Silk - other than apparels alone and encourage their sale and use on a national scale. Skill development in this regard with emphasis on use of professionals for new designs , new products ,new applications need to be forthcoming and promotional incentives maybe devised to encourage entrepreneurs to set up ventures using silk as raw material ,not necessarily at source but at points of sale of finished products.

Good quality seed cocoon required for superior quality of silk. Promote robust competition for Chinese silk flooding our markets. Modern technology taught to, be made available for cocoon growers/weavers. More land allotted for cultivation of mulberry silk. Help poor reelers to get bank loans. Heavy duty to be imposed on imported silk. Elevate sericulture from cottage industry level by giving subsidies and incentives. End users of silk, fashion designers to advise on ways of improvement.

It is important to understand the natural demand of Silk. In our country, the weather is such that in most places, it is difficult to wear Silk as casuals. It is mostly worn only for functions / events. However, it would be a natural fit to most western countries. Hence, it would be worthwhile to talk to various international design houses to use Silk as their basic fabric to make the finished product - Business Suits, etc. Offer incentives to International designers to make in India & export.
