Silk, the Queen of textiles, is adored by all for its sheer sheen, luster, elegance, class and comfort. It has several natural properties like natural sheen, inherent affinity for dyes and vibrant colours, light weight, resilience and excellent drape etc. which makes it distinct from all other fibers both natural and man-made. Though silk products are consumed more by urban rich, its production is highly employment oriented, low capital intensive and remunerative that churns out value added products of economic importance, especially the rural people.

India is the second largest producer of silk in the world and the silk industry provides employment to about 7.8 million people in the rural and semi-urban areas in the country. The women participation in various activities in silk value chain is about 54%. The silk always attracts competition from synthetic fibers, though which look like silk.

Share your ideas and opinions on how to increase the demand for Indian silk in the country as well as abroad by exploring new products, designs, markets, fashion, trends, promotion measures, target groups, etc.

( 6) Thus only limited Markt. exists in India. This can be enlarged by collective efforts of Univ.Textile depts.+ Marketers + Designers+ Modern tech. (use of computer-aided design-graphics)to get at better designed products. As I understand, cotton-mills need regulation of humidity to maintain integrity of woven cloth while silk has no such constraint. I have seen Kanchi-weavers working under hot-sun. To me, apart from domestic markts, Foreign markts. look promising & need to be cultivated well.

( 5) But, 'final produce' is becoming prohibitively costly due to multiplicity of factors. Textile engineering departments in various Universities must come out with solutions to segregate variety, techniques ( NOTE: traditional ones have own VALUE), if mix up of fabrics can bring down prices, attracting new customers by collaboration of various Design-institutes with Textile-manufacturers + end-users etc.,& whether traditional-quality can be kept, while mechanizing some operation, incl. weaving

( 4) In both the States I mention here, silk-boards operate but Mysuru silk-board holds rebate-sales often. Wide markting techniques incl. using brokers/ tour-operators to bring customers to silk-emporium are some of techniques. But to me, Sarees alone cannot make up for total consumption of silk produced in India. In foreign Nations, "Fashion-shows" highlight such fabrics are held regularly-well-attended & famous. India must rope-in leading Fashion-designers to promote our wide variety of silks

( 3) Cost is thus dependent upon weight of saree/ dhoti ( mainly,'it is saree'!!!), Jhari-works, elaborate designs that entail extra-man-power & time etc . Compared to Kanchi silks, Mysuru silk is a lighter-varsity type. I learn that differences are mainly due to 'worms & mulberry' grown are main causes + mix up of artificial silk with genuine silk + lack of Jhari-work etc. I hear that Kanchi silk is made after killing worms & Mysuru silk is made w/out killing worms &are reused to spin-out more.

( 2 ) As i understand they are the ones who 'contract' orders on say, Kanchi- weavers basing them on present trends, customers' preference etc. They also suggest designs, as silk-textile design itself is an elaborate one. Usually Jhari work if ordered, takes more time. Silk-sarees thus produced on orders for unique moments like DEEWALI, marriage seasons etc command good Markt. Possibly, Govt. must study the modus-operandi of Madras silk-sellers closely & duplicate elsewhere for domestic Markts.

(1 )Query needs in depth attention and reply. Before that, already existing silk-production centers at Kanchi, Aarni (TN) Mysuru, Koleghal ( K'taka), Banaras etc also need to be studied to get at cost of production , types of operation adopted, nos. of producers of people in mulberry-cultivation and worm rearing+ silk-threads+ weavers + allied operations. The silk industry is an elaborate one. Leading Chennai-silk-textile marketeers adopt unique mkting & promotion techniques. These need study.

Handloom weavers should have their COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES to sell their products thru e commerce. So they get more profit. Our learned PM, had in his speech today, pointed out ways of creating new market for our handloom industry. Every speech of our PM is a masterpiece, that spontaneously establishes a connect with the audience I would urge all mygov members to listen to his two speeches in Benares. Very inspiring for us !.
