Our country has made significant progress in bringing down the number of death among children below 5 years. However the number of child deaths is still very high. Death in Children are due to "Malnutrition" in Mother & Child. During pregnancy, the food should be nutritious. Unfortunately Gov is promoting "wrong" techniques of cooking to save fuel. Fuel is not important - nutrition is. Nutrition is several times costly than Fuel. Using "Cooker" - the food looses 90% - yes as per Gov research institutes. Cooker or "fast" cooking should be banned, or atleast - sensitised regarding this using Media. The Mother + Child automatically turn healthy.

An important aspect to reduce child deaths are educating mothers on weaning at 6 months and diet in children. There is ignorance rather than poverty widespread with rural superstitions. Mothers and extended families should be counselled on food habits/nutritious food/ hazards of artificial milk, feeding bottles and ready made food

Every maternity centre should have breast feeding counsellor who can address and support mothers on exclusive breast feeding. This seems to be too simple but the problem is enormous even in villages due to lack of knowledge and support.Artificial milk and bottles play havoc with our childrens'health.Any literate woman can be trained for this purpose and Breast feeding Promotion Network of India can train and guide on this aspect. We have seen enormous reduction in pneumonia and diarrhoea after EBF

As a Pediatrician working in rural India(Puttaparthi)for last 8 years-we have found 2 most important aspects to prevent mortality and morbidity in India are Exclusive breast feeding for first 6 months and weaning after 6 months. Exclusive breast feeding requires lot of education and encouragement not only to mothers but to the extended families too.Every maternity centre of India should have a breast feeding counsellor who can bring about giant leap in childrens' health.Train literate women

Contd from previous comment: AWW, ASHA workers, ANM, PHC doctors, everyone has to be trained thoroughly in primacy care pediatrics for 1st 1000 days, which will result in healthy child at 2 years of age. Also, this way stunting will be prevented and IQ of the child will be saved. Good for the economy in the long run!! There is absolutely no support for breastfeeding/complementary feeding phase to the mom. She is totally clueless. This can be prevented by training our field workers #ChildHealth

I am a trained pediatrician from US working for underprivileged children for past 8 years in the field of malnutrition. What is lacking in our country is proper knowledge of ENA-Essential Nutrition Action, at every level in our health care system. Mothers go to PHC just to get vaccine. She has no clue of anything till it is so late that child becomes malnourished and starts developing infections and die.. We need to empower each and everyone in health care system about ENA for good #ChildHealth

We may Prevent deaths in children by educating the the mothers specially in Rural area's and from weaker section. We have to launch the vaccination drive for all disease which may causes the death to the children. We have to strengthen the medical services in the rural area's to stop deaths in children.
